The Nut along with the Bridge make up the scale of your banjo, the nut also provides a method of equally spacing your strings apart. On the 5th fret you also have a small plug that acts as a nut for the 5th string, theoretically this should be called the Nut as well....but many people refer to it as the pip or plug......normaly made of ebony, plastic, bone, ivory etc.,
